Day 1 Monday: Guayaquil – Cuenca – City tour
In the morning you will drive from the coast to the Andeans, to the colonial city of Cuenca. After the arrival you will go directly to the hotel El Dorado. After lunch you will do a sightseeing tour through the colonial part of Cuenca with its beautiful churches, handicraft stalls and the well-known flower market. Cuenca is the culture metropolis and the arts and crafts centre of Ecuador. Its cosy atmosphere is underlined by the many cobbled stone pavements and the many noble façades with the stilted balustrades and wrought-iron balconies.
In Cuenca ceramics, embroidery, leather goods and baskets are manufactured. Dinner and overnight accommodation in the Hotel El Dorado. B/L/D
Day 2 Tuesday: Cuenca and its surroundings
After the breakfast you will do a day excursion through the mountain landscape to the Eastern part of Cuenca. On the way to your first stop you will pass a fascination landscape to the village of Gualaceo. It seems to be a miniature form of Cuenca with its narrow alleys, beautiful plazas and the tranquil atmosphere. In this village there are made colourful woollen clothes which are famous in the whole country. You will also visit an orchid farm which is close to the village of Gualaceo. From there you continue to Chordeleg. It is said to be the ecuadorian center for silver and gold juwlery.
In the afternoon you will return to Cuenca where you will spend the night in the Hotel El Dorado. B/L/D
Day 3 Wednesday: Cuenca – Ingapirca – Riobamba
Today you will go further to the North. On the way you will stop at the famous ‘Ingapirca’ (Quechua for “wall rocks of the Inca”) the most important and well preserved Inca ruins in Ecuador where you can wander around the beautiful site and visit the museum. After the visit you will have lunch and continue your way to Riobamba the capital of the province Chimborazo.
It is surrounded by the mountains Chimborazo, Carihuayrazo, Altar and Tungurahua and is the most important agars centre of the Ecuadorian Andeans. About 80% of the people living around the city are Indio and come to Riobamba on the days when the markets take place.
In the afternoon you will visit the typical Andeans market of Mercado de la Merced. There you can buy fruits, vegetables, juices and many other things. Dinner and Overnight in the Hosteria Abrasprungo. B/L/D
Day 4 Thursday: Avenue of the Waterfalls – Baños
In the morning you will drive from Riobamba to Baños. On the way you will pass the dam Agoyan and follows a dusty road through the valley of the Rio Pastaza with its many waterfalls down to the “Pailon del Diablo” Waterfall. Afterwards you will continue your journey to Baños. Around lunch time you will arrive in the charming town of Baños at the foot of Vulcan Tungurahua, which is still active and the source of the hot springs for which Baños is famous
There you will have lunch. In the afternoon you can stroll through the small street or relax in the hot springs. Overnight accommodation in the Hotel Sangay. B/L/-
Day 5 Friday: Baños – Cotopaxi – Quito
You will drive further to the North on the Pan-American Highway through the famous avenue of the volcanoes until the entrance of the Cotopaxi National Park where you will visit the little museum. On your way through the national park you will visit the lagoon Limpiopungo as well as the Inca ruins ‘El Salitre’ located in the highlands of the park and have lunch at the Tambopaxi acclimatization centre with great views of Cotopaxi volcano.
In the afternoon you will drive to Quito where the tour ends. B/L/-
